The office parties and festive evening drinks are already in full swing, with plenty more mulled wine and turkey to squeeze in before the New Year. So you may be worrying about zipping up your LBD or not being able to quite button up your best jacket.

So how does one approach the party season when surrounded by such temptations…

For starters you should be getting 4 sessions of at least 30 minutes of exercise each week. That means properly getting your heart rate up and breaking into a sweat. Maybe you can walk up the escalators, go for a jog at lunchtime (it’s the only time you’ll see real daylight anyway) and ride a Boris bike through some of London’s large, historical parks, to get things moving.

Make sure you don’t turn up to the party with an empty stomach. A banana on the way there or bowl of soup beforehand will keep hunger at bay and stop you from indulging on too many delectable hors d’oeuvres.
Next, you should think twice when choosing which delicious canapé to go for. You’re going to have to say no to the deep fried finger food. Even that veggie quiche isn’t as innocent as it seems, with most pastries containing 50% fat. Watch out for the fatty dips too. Swapping the mayonnaise or sour cream and chive dip for tomato-based salsa or homemade guacamole will cut unnecessary saturated fat intake.

It may even be worth serving some alternatives on Xmas Day. 100g of sausage meat stuffing contains around 252kcal and 16g of fat, whereas 100g of cranberry, orange and roast chestnut stuffing can be 162kcal and only 0.8g of fat. Chestnuts are also a great source of potassium. Another top tip is to pour the turkey juices into a jug and wait for the fat to rise to the surface so you can easily spoon it off to make a lower fat gravy.
