Banana Ice CreamThe Ice Cream Sundae

What could be more relevant to blog about today than the wonderful Ice Cream Sundae. After having the longest EVER British summer of 3 weeks it’s surely worth talking about our trusty summer treat! Today is also National Hot fudge Ice Cream Sundae day so double reasons for my little blog on this fine Friday!

So if you don’t know, the Sundae is a sweet ice cream dessert. It typically consists of one or more scoops  of ice cream which is then topped with sauce and then other toppings too! Additional toppings can be whatever the heck you like…. chocolate chips, 100s and 1000s, banana, glacier cherries, whipped cream, malteasers, smarties, chocolate brownie. I’m not sure I recommend all of the above.  Who am I kidding, I definitely recommend all of the above! You can always pretend you are sharing… I won’t tell anyone!

Ice Cream SundaeThere are a few ideas as to where the term Ice Cream Sundae came from…. Most are to do with the translation of Sundae into Sunday or Soontag (German) as something so rich and “naughty” should only be enjoyed at the weekend. Another idea is that it came from the German word Sunde which means sin, alluding again to the calorie rich nature of the sundae.

Recently in Kingston, NY there was a world record made for the largest ever Ice cream sundae that was Ice cream 2large enough to feed 7,000 people… yes that’s, Seven Thousand people. It reached for 1,606 feet long! CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY!!

So this weekend, whilst the British summer is set to continue with a heatwave…. Get yourself a glass from your cupboard and a couple of scoops of ice cream and sprinkle whatever you can find in the cupboards over it….. Pictures welcome.

Happy Friday and Happy Hot Fudge Ice Cream Sundae Day!
